Richard Lees Steel Decking, the UK’s leading manufacturer of steel decking solutions has secured a prestigious six-figure contract to help create the tallest hotel in the world. The move will see the Derbyshire-based firm continue to expand its presence within the Middle East.

The Rose Rotana Suites building which is set to be completed in 2006 will stand at a height of 333m and provide 480 luxurious hotel suites in the heart of Dubai. Richard Lees Steel Decking were specified by Khatib and Alami architects, based in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. The contract to provide over 35,000 square metres of steel decking, worth in the region of £500,000, has been received from the successful contractor, Eversendai Engineering LLC.

Ribdeck 80, the steel decking solution chosen for the project will be used across 72 stories within the hotel. Selected for its ability to provide shallow floors and broad spans, the specification of Ribdeck 80 enabled the architects to benefit from a greater degree of flexibility within the design of the building. The hotel incorporates a number of large atriums that add to the feeling of spaciousness at every level.

Combining all the strengths of traditional steel decking, Ribdeck 80 enables developers to benefit from shallow floors that can span up to 4.5m without the need for any temporary propping and enables both construction time and overall costs to be reduced. Richard Lees Steel Decking estimates that the number of components in a steel framed building can be substantially reduced by as much as 20%.

Dr. Chris Hampton, Director of Richard Lees Steel Decking said: “The Rose Rotana Suites is a stunning building and one that will complement the many varieties of architecture on the Dubai skyline. During the design process it was essential that we could provide the architects with assurances on the product. Through the experience gained on major projects in more than 30 countries we were able to demonstrate successfully that we could offer a product and vital support skills that are second-to-none.”

“It took over two years to design the project and during that time we provided full technical support to the design engineers. As part of the contract we will be preparing all working drawings for the contractor, to ensure the successful installation of the floor decking. The need to integrate flexibility into the core design of buildings is becoming an increasingly important element within the construction industry helping to ensure that they can be tailored to meet the architect’s design. I am delighted that we have been chosen for this project and the award further demonstrates our ongoing commitment to the burgeoning Middle East market.”

Richard Lees has worked on numerous projects across the Middle East and Asia, including the Grand Hyatt hotel in Dubai, Kuala Lumpur Airport terminal building, the Petronas Towers shopping Mall, Qatar Science and Technology Park, Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, and a new headquarters building for the Abu Dhabi National Oil Corporation.
